The Kutztown Rotary Club awarded Amanda Miller and Heather Wood its Student of the Month award in ceremonies at the Kutztown Tavern Jan. 8.

The recognition is given each month to a student from Kutztown Area High School and Brandywine Heights High School that have been selected by guidance counselors for scholarship, student activities and community service.

Heather Wood is a senior at Brandywine Heights High School and has been in the National Honor society for the past two years. She has been active in Chorus, County Choir, Choraliers, Band and is currently treasurer of the Choir Council. She has been part of the golf and soccer teams, Student Council, Student Government and Student Connections Committee, of which she is president.

In the community, Wood volunteers at St. Joseph Medical Center and sings with the Choraliers at churches and other community centers. She has been employed as a waitress at the Landis Store Hotel and as a wedding server at the Glassbern Inn.

Amanda Miller is a senior at Kutztown Area High School and is also a member of the National Honor Society. She entertained Rotarians with a selection on the bassoon, which she plays in the Reading Symphony Youth Orchestra. In addition to school music activities, she has been in County Band, County Orchestra, County Chorus, County Jazz Band, District Band, District Orchestra, Region Band, Region Orchestra, All-State Wind Ensemble, All-State Orchestra and All-Eastern Band.

In school, she is in the band, jazz band, chorus, pit orchestra and percussion ensemble. She participates in the Science Olympiad, Math League and serves as president of the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

In the community, Miller is a member of Salem EC Church’s youth group and music program and teaches private bassoon and piano lessons.
