Dwayne Knowles, co-owner & trainer of Broadmoor in Kutztown, Pa., recently received the Cecil Brown Memorial Sportsmanship Award during the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) National Convention. The event was held Feb. 18-22 in Raleigh, N.C. Kutztown graduate Suzy Lucine, of Reading, Pa., received the Mabel Owen Media Award.
Dwayne received this award because he is the very essence of a sportsman. The Cecil J. Brown Memorial Sportsmanship Award goes to a person who puts his or her own needs aside and comes to help others. They are the first one to offer a helping hand, lend equipment, celebrate victory, or console a loss. He is one of the first to offer help whenever a competitor needs it. Dwayne encourages and supports exhibitors regardless of their affiliation with other training barns. He sets a good role model for his sportsmanship at shows, both as an exhibitor and a judge.
Of course, the real test of any horse trainer comes from his students. As one client writes, ‘From offering support and encouragement to Broadmoor’s many amateurs to helping competitors with a word ringside, there is no one who works harder with his horses yet accepts the ribbon he received. Dwayne exemplifies sportsmanship.’
Mabel Owen was one of the first chroniclers of the breed, so it is fitting that Suzy Lucine is this award’s first recipient. For decades, Suzy has been at the forefront of promoting the breed through various equine and non-equine publications alike, be it in on the international, national, and even local level. Suzy’s love and promotion for the Morgan go back to her childhood; she was born a Morgan ambassador!
Whether she is sharing historical and fun photographs or highlighting the achievements of others in print or online, Suzy always promotes the breed and its people with pride and admiration. She brings her readers to the heart and soul of the breed: the relationship between the horses and the people who love them. We are pleased to honor Suzy for her contributions, for allowing the public to learn and enjoy the breed, and for recording for posterity activities involving the Morgan on a daily basis.
