Police Reports: Fatal crash, Explorer collides with Kawasaki & fraud arrests

Fatal accident on Route 222, Richmond Twp.

Fleetwood Borough Police Department report a motor vehicle collision that resulted in a fatality on March 30 at 4:58 a.m. on Route 222 northbound bypass at Kutztown Road bridge in Richmond Township.

A driver, unidentified until next of kin notified, traveling south on Route 222 crossed over the center grass median strip for an unknown reason, and into the path of a vehicle driven by Alberto Sanchez-Felix, 47, Reading. The unidentified driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. Sanchez-Felix and his passenger Lee Brown were transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital and his other passenger Benjamin Cano was transported to Reading Hospital Medical Center.

Fleetwood Police Department was assisted on scene by Berks Co. Coroners Office, Virginville Fire Co., Kutztown Fire Co., Topton Fire Co., Walnuttown Fire Co., Fleetwood Ambulance, Kutztown Ambulance and the Medivac flight crew came in POV due to helicopter being grounded due to weather.

The unidentified driver and Sanchez-Felix were belted. The case is still under investigation.

Accident on Kutztown Road, Richmond Twp.

Fleetwood Police report an accident on March 29 at 2:02 p.m. on Kutztown Road in Richmond Twp.

Joseph Bowman, 59, of Fleetwood, and William Stout, 31, of Point of Rocks, Md., and Filomena Covert, 48, of Shavertown, were traveling south on Kutztown Road. As traffic was slowing down for a traffic signal, Bowman was driving too fast to safely stop. The front end of his car struck the rear of Stout’s car. After impact, both Bowman and Stout continued in the southbound lane for approximately 100 feet, with Bowman’s vehicle connected to the rear of Stout’s vehicle. Stout’s front end then struck the rear of Covert’s car. After impact, all three vehicles proceeded for approximately 20 feet before stopping.

Bowman and passenger Kimberly Komline, 33, of Md., were transported via Fleetwood and Kutztown Ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital for evaluation. Both sustained minor injuries. Bowman was not wearing a seatbelt. Covert sustained minor injuries. Other passengers were not injured.

Bowman will be charged with driving vehicle at safe speed and for not having valid insurance on his vehicle. Virginville Fire Company and Walnutown Fire Company assisted at the scene.

Access Device Fraud ArrestsThe Borough of Fleetwood Police Department report an incident of access device fraud on March 28 at 12:44 p.m. at Hess Express in Richmond Twp.

The persons accused were Crystal Torres, 24, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Terrell Pickering, 19, of East Stroudsburg, Pa. The incident occurred when Torres entered the Hess Express and attempted to purchase a carton of cigarettes using an altered American Express gift card. The fraudulent transaction was identified by the alert clerk and the sale was declined. Torres immediately exited the store and got into a black Chevrolet Malibu operated by Pickering.

The duo headed northbound on SR 222 and Fleetwood and Kutztown Police converged on the area of likely flight. Approximately 1:16 p.m. a vehicle matching the description was observed exiting the Weis Plaza on Kutztown Road in Maxatawny Twp. The vehicle was stopped by Fleetwood and Kutztown Police Officers and Torres and Pickering were arrested without incident.

Four altered access devices were located in the vehicle, as well as two large trash bags containing a total of 31 cartons of cigarettes from at least seven different retail stores in Berks and Schuylkill counties that were to be transported to New York City for sale. The recovered cigarettes are valued in excess of $2,000. The altered cards were electronically loaded with account information found to come from accounts as far away as Canada.

Fleetwood Police are working with police departments across several jurisdictions and security personnel from several banking and retail establishments to identify potential victims.

The accused were transported to the Berks County Central Processing Center and remanded to the custody of the Sheriff’s Department pending preliminary arraignment.

Ford Explorer collides with Kawasaki Ninja

Kutztown Borough Police report a motor vehicle accident on March 31 at 1:16 p.m. at the intersection of Greenwich and Peach streets in Kutztown. The persons involved were C. Stuebner, 21, of Hamburg, driving a 2006 Kawasaki Ninja and M. Scheirer, 22, of Kutztown, driving a 1996 Ford Explorer, owned by C & M. Scheirer of Kutztown.

The accident occurred when Scheirer, who was stopped at a stop sign on Peach Street, pulled from the stop sign to make a left hand turn in the travel path of Stuebner, who was unable to avoid a collision. Stuebner struck the left rear quarter panel of Scheirer’s vehicle.

Stuebner was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was transported by Kutztown Area Transport Service to Reading Hospital for treatment of injuries. There were no injuries to Scheirer, who reported wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The police department was assisted at the scene by the Kutztown Fire Company with traffic control. Stuebner’s vehicle was driven from the scene by his father. The police department asks if anyone witnessed the accident to contact them at 610-683- 3545.
