Giant in Maxatawny Township donated more than 150 of its own brand hams to Friend Inc. Food Pantry on April 15 as part of the store’s annual ‘Bag Hunger with Hams’ giveaway.

The program provides free bagged hams for families in need during the Easter holiday.

‘[The giveaway] allows families to have an Easter meal together that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to,’ said Friend Inc. Executive Director, Sandra Wise. ‘Through Giant’s generosity we are able to continue to do that.’

The donation is just one of several that Giant conducts throughout the year for various holidays.

‘It’s always important because we want to give back to the community and help out families in need,’ said Giant store manager Steve Bowlby. ‘That’s why we always try to do things like this for big holidays like Easter and Thanksgiving. We love giving back. That is our favorite thing that we can do.’

The hams will be directly distributed by Friend Inc. through their food pantry, which provides food to more than 1,000 individuals in northeastern Berks County annually.

‘It is good to see the faces when people come to get the hams,’ said Wise. ‘It is nice to know you are making a difference.’
