Community members spent the day helping keep the Kernsville Dam Recreation Area clean on Saturday, April 19.

The Earth Day Cleanup was hosted by Blue Mountain Wildlife Incorporated, the group that is responsible for the area which members use quite heavily. Others in the area also take advantage of the scenic area for hiking, walking, biking and other outdoor activities.

More than 60 people, some in large groups and some as small families, volunteered to pick up trash in the area. People of all ages put on the orange safety vest, grabbed some gloves and trash bags and began to clean up.

According to Blue Mountain Wildlife’s Facebook page, 96 bags of trash and four tires were removed from the area. A crew of people from Cabela’s also planted two tree and worked on the garden area to clean it up. The crew from Cabela’s also helped remove a few trees and logs that were along the road.

Beginning at 9 a.m., the cleanup was an all day event lasting until 4 p.m. This year’s Earth Day Cleanup was very successful and the volunteers helped to keep the area enjoyable for all and safer for the animals.
