The Woman’s Club of Strausstown held their April meeting, ‘My Backyard Birds’ and were privileged to have as their guest Jack Holcomb, radio host from WEEU, whose knowledge of the avian world is extensive and colorful. Invited for this special meeting, husbands and guests of the club members were delighted to hear his anecdotes and remembrances. Mr. Holcomb told the group of his initiation into bird-watching in 1965 when he was called to the office at WEEU and asked, ‘How’d you like to do a bird show?’ He bought himself a 99-cent bird book and began a decades-long association with his feathered friends. His Saturday morning radio show, ‘Jack’s Backyard,’ is a favorite around Reading and Berks County and draws listeners who love to call into the program with their own tales of unusual sightings and experiments in attracting birds to feeders. While Mr. Holcomb is known as one who is knowledgeable about birds, he is interested in all the creatures of nature and commented on the beauty and variety he had observed on his way to Strausstown from his home in West Reading. He told the group that getting out into nature is one of the best ways to relieve stress, and his genial and relaxed presentation certainly attested to that.

In other business, the club held elections for the 2014-2016 club term. Newly elected officers are: President, Margaret Behm; 1st Vice President, Pearl Wurst; 2nd Vice President, Cathy Diggan; Recording Secrtetary, Bonnie Drescher; Corresponding Secretary, Robin Faust; and Treasurer, Elaine Hamm. Officer induction will take place at the May meeting, which will be a mother-daughter luncheon at the Blue Mountain Family Restaurant on May 10, and will feature a theme of ‘I Remember Mama,’ with guests asked to bring along pictures of their mothers. Reservations are due by May 1.
