What’s five years old and can stop traffic on a Tuesday night on East Philadelphia Ave.? Boyertown Idol! This year the Berks-Mont Business Association and entertainer Adam Moyer are celebrating the 5th anniversary of what may arguably be one of Boyertown’s best ideas since Fun Days.
The legions of the talented in and around Boyertown will be once again be lining up at all five tryout locations hoping to secure one of the 12 spots in the finals at the end of the BMBA’s Sidewalk Expo. While it may sound difficult to grab a spot in the finals, it’s even more difficult for Adam Moyer to sort through the hundreds of auditions and pick out only 12 finalists. No wonder Adams hair seems to be thinner every year. When the finalists reach the stage, it is the unenviable task of the judges to figure out who should win.
Contestants are judged on things like audience participation, stage presence and song knowledge along with their singing talent. Often it is the differences in these variables that swing the scores one way or the other, so polishing ones performance is highly recommended.
For the first timers coming out here is some advice. Try to pick a song you are familiar with and pick it before you arrive at the tryout. You may also want to have a backup song picked out just in case. Adam has a 675 page catalog of songs in all different musical genres. There are 5 different tryout dates, if something goes sideways with your performance you are able to try again at another tryout. BE SURE to read the tryout dates carefully, even though the Boyertown Idol contest is open to contestants 15 years and older, certain tryout locations require participants to be 21 years or older to enter. Most of all, relax and enjoy the experience the competition is fierce, but friendly. Make friends and network, there are karaoke events all around the area and they are a fun crowd.
To celebrate Boyertown Idol’s 5th anniversary, the past winners will perform their winning songs at a special tryout at The Historic State Theater. This will be an awesome night to come watch or perform!
There are other rules and regulations, of course, and you can find them and a multitude of other information at www.boyertownidol.com. Yes, the song list is also there to peruse. Also listed are the generous and numerous BMBA sponsors that make Boyertown Idol the special community event it is.
