With Luke Skywalker references to inspire the young minds of today, Exeter Township Senior High School’s Class of 2014 salutatorian Jeffrey Crosby fired up the crowd when he introduced classmate and valedictorian Victoria Waldman, pausing to “… first let me take a #selfie.”
The song “#selfie” by The Chainsmokers is an party anthem for today’s youth. The upbeat club hit references the common practice of taking a photo of yourself on your phone, known as “a selfie.” The crowd roared with approval of the reference. welcoming Waldman to the microphone. “Every single person in this class is important,” she said during her speech.
Class President Thomas Dolan, Superintendent Dr. Beverly Martin, school board President Robert Quinter and high school Principal William Cain also spoke at the ceremony.
During his speech, Quinter welcomed the graduates “on behalf of the community” and told the class to “be true to your core values…we’re all in this together.”
Martin encouraged the student body to embrace the change of today as “things are different now,” she said, referencing the fact that today many professionals hold a number of job titles throughout their career, unlike past generations.
Cain ended his speech with a poem from Emily Dickinson saying: “If I can stop one heart from breaking/
I shall not live in vain/ If I can ease one life the aching/Or cool one pain/ Or help one fainting robin/ Unto his nest again/ I shall not live in vain.”
The arena was full with family, friends and loved ones in support of the graduates. The ceremony was held 7 p.m. Friday, June 6, at Santander Arena where 338 Exeter Township students graduated.
