A Bernville man died after a head on, two vehicle crash in Jefferson Twp. on June 12.

Pennsylvania State Police report that the fatal accident occurred in the 7000 block of Bernville Rd. (Route 183) in Jefferson Twp. at 2:25 a.m.

Robert Alan Koch, Jr., 23, of Bernville, was traveling northbound on Route 183 in a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta at a high rate of speed. Koch’s car was weaving and exited the roadway causing Koch to overcorrect and re-enter the roadway. He then crossed into the southbound lane and struck a 2013 Ford F-150 operated by Brian Joseph Lutz, 43, of Bernville, according to a witness that was traveling behind Koch. Koch hit Lutz head on.

According to the police, Koch was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead on scene by the Berks County Coroner’s Office. Lutz was wearing a seatbelt and sustained moderate injuries. He was transported to Reading Hospital by ambulance.

Route 183 was closed in both directions for approximately two hours while the scene was cleared.

Bernville Fire Department and Fire Police assisted at the scene.
