The Shoemakersville Recreation Board is a group of volunteers who run the eight week park program each summer. The board consists of seven individuals. Five of the members represent Shoemakersville Borough and two member represent Perry Township. There is also a representative from Shoemakersville Borough Council that is included within the seven members.

Our park program has been offered for more than 60 years, free to the children of Shoemakersville and surrounding areas. The board meets from January through August about one or two meetings a month. Meetings are one to two hours long.

Planning for the Children’s Fair and Parade starts in January and continues until the day of the event which is always the first Saturday in June. The Children’s Fair is our only money making event. The monies that are generated are used for paying the leaders and for buying playground equipment.

Between planning the fair, the board interview potential leaders to run the park program and activities are planned for the program. Activities include ice cream social, Fourth of July picnic, crafts, afternoon at the pool, park in the dark, world cup soccer, daily tournaments and move in the park.

More than 100 children register for this program every summer. Do your children attend the park program? Would you be able to give a few hours of time each month to help keep this worthwhile program going? Consider coming to a Recreation Board meeting. Join us and see what the Recreation Board is about. Meetings will be posted at Shoemakersville Park Program on Facebook.

Our board wishes for this tradition to continue with the help and support of some new individuals. The members of the board have each served consecutive terms and are looking to move forward with their children’s other activities.
