Aperture Press announces local author Norma Tamayo has been named an Award Winning Author on Saturday, June 28, 2014, in Las Vegas, Nevada, for her young adult novel, ‘A Girl Named Nina,’ by the International Latino Book Awards, the largest awards in the United States celebrating achievements in Latino literature and culture. Tamayo resides in Exeter Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
Latino Literacy Now’s International Latino Book Awards took place on June 28, 2014 in Las Vegas as part of the American Library Association’s 2014 Conference. The Awards were presented at the Clark County Las Vegas Library Theater. Over the last 16 years the International Latino Book Awards has grown to become the largest Latino literary and cultural awards in the United States. Among this year’s honorees were well known celebrities and authors, including Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Winners hailed from across the United States and from 18 countries outside the United States. Sales of books by past winning authors have totaled more than 200 million copies. This year’s Award sponsors include Libros Publishing, Scholastic Books, and Vaso Roto Ediciones.
In recognition of the quality and variety of award-winning books now available, Latino Literacy Now (a nonprofit co-founded by Edward James Olmos and Kirk Whisler), producer of the International Latino Book Awards, is conducting the 2014 Award Winning Author Tour. Book displays of the Award Winning Authors will be presented at the American Library Association Convention; CABE, the largest Latino teacher conference in the USA; the Chicago Latino Book & Family Festival; the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books; LULAC National Convention; the National Council of La Raza Annual Conference; the San Bernardino Latino Book Festival; and other key events around the country. Latino Literacy Now has also produced 54 Latino Book & Family Festivals around the United States (attended by a combined 900,000 people), and the Latino Books into Movies Awards.
Norma Tamayo is the author of A Girl Named Nina, published in 2013 by Aperture Press. She was born and raised in New York City. She is of Puerto Rican descent and is bilingual in English and Spanish. As a transient child erself, Norma spent most of her childhood years living in apartment buildings in Brooklyn and later in Jersey City and Hoboken. She is a playwright, actor, and registered nurse who has worked at the Reading Hospital for a number of years. She currently teaches the Health Medical Professions program at Reading Muhlenberg CTC, where she works with high school students. As the advisor of her HOSA Freedom Chapter, Norma earned the Outstanding HOSA Advisor award in 2008 at State and National levels. Her chapter has received the Outstanding Newsletter and Outstanding HOSA Chapter award for more than six consecutive years.
Norma resides in Reading, Pennsylvania with her loving family.
