Shoemakersville Borough Council voted, 5-0, on July 1 to transfer $50,000 from the borough’s general fund to its sewer fund.

Unexpected repair work at the borough’s sewer plant necessitated the transfer, according to borough secretary Melissa Wagner.

In related news, council voted, 5-0, too send an invoice to the Perry Township Municipal Authority for $47,001 representing the PTMA’s share of repair work done at the plant.

As part of a contract with PTMA, the amount equals about 40 percent of the cost of repairs and maintenance, according to councilman Chris Kline.

Council also voted, 5-0, to reauthorize the existence of the borough’s municipal authority for 50 years.

The previous 50-year term expired in 2013.

Councilman Joe Wertz, Jr. questioned the need for the authority.

Solicitor Keith Mooney told council that there is a need for the authority mainly because the borough has sewer customers outside of the borough in Perry Township.

In other news, engineer Michael Sassaman informed council of a break-in at the waste water treatment plant in the evening of June 30.

‘Nothing was damaged or stolen,’ Sassaman said. ‘(The intruders) closed off air valves which caused the blowers to shut down.

‘There are duplicate air systems so no problems were caused. The Department of Environmental Protection was notified.’

The next council meeting is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. at St. Luke’s Church.
