The Pottstown Health and Wellness Foundation is sponsoring a ‘Favorite Park’ contest for the month of July and the Boyertown Community Park was in third place according to Lori Carnes at the council meeting on July 7.

The purpose of the contest is to promote healthy lifestyles by getting out and being active in the community. The first place prize is a $10,000 recreation grant, the runner-up will receive $7,500 and the second runner-up will get $5,000.

There are 12 competing parks in the area. Carnes said if Boyertown would win, the money would go towards improving the park and it would be very beneficial to the community.

The foundation’s local campaign is called ‘On Your Park, Get Set, Go.’ Residents can vote from a ballot of 12 area parks from a list online at bit.ly/1qHrzvM. The contest began July 1 and ends July 31.

To cast your vote, go to the park of your choice and use your smart phone to scan the QR code at the designated spots. Carnes mentioned these are at the flagpole, Rohrbach Pavilion, disc golf course, and pool entrance at the Boyertown Community Park. The Wellness Foundation website also gives those without a smart phone the ability to gain more votes by posting a ‘selfie’ on their Facebook page or by emailing your photo to the address on the flier. Votes are worth double the amount on Saturday’s.

Ashley Pultorak, the foundation’s program officer of schools, recreation and active living, said after seeing the national campaign, the foundation knew it could do a contest locally.

The foundation invited all the municipalities in their service area to participate and then asked those interested to nominate a park for the contest. The final list for the campaign is 12 local parks.
