‘I’m here for them,’ nurse Sue Shobe wants to relay to the residents of the Birdsboro and Douglassville areas.
Since January, Shobe has been integrated as the Faith Community Nurse through Hopewell Love In the Name of Christ, serving as a free resource for consultations, referrals and diagnoses.
The Hamburg resident has been a nurse for over 30 years, where she worked in 12 year stints as a school nurse, in a nursing home and with an agency. Currently, Shobe works for Adventists Whole Health Network, Reading, who placed her within the Birdsboro and Douglassville community.
‘I had an aunt [who] was a nurse, and I always enjoyed helping people,’ she said of her introduction to the medical field.
As the community becomes more aware of her services, she is seeing a greater response to people who are in need of her assistance, stopping by to ask questions about their health.
‘It’s picking up as people trust..and recognize me as being a figure in the community,’ Shobe told Berks-Mont Newspapers.
One individual she has been working with expresses their gratitude to her, saying ‘I wouldn’t be able to do it by myself,’ which for Shobe, makes her work worthwhile.
‘It’s most rewarding when you’re able to help somebody,’ she said. The nurse feels her specialities include ‘being a good listener, and assessing resources that are important.’
Shobe assists people of all ages throughout the week at various locations in the Birdsboro and Douglassville area. She is available 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays at the Boone Area Library, 129 Mill St., Birdsboro; 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Fridays at the Birdsboro Community Center, 201 E. Main St., Birdsboro and Wednesdays and Thursdays at the St. Paul’s Church education department church office.
