Local libraries cross-referenced with one retail store recently for an annual fundraiser full of events.
The toy section of Boscov’s East, Reading, was bustling in activities and games for children as part of the fourth library fundraiser through the company. An array of rainbow colored balloons were transformed into various animal creatures including octopuses, spiders by Ladybug the Clown.
Girl Scout Troops 1676 and 1364, of the Pagoda service unit, hosted a variety of crafts where children could color and make their own bookmarks. Representatives from the Boone Area Library and the Exeter Community Library read stories as part of the Saturday, Aug. 23 events.
The store front was lined with tables where ‘Friends of the Libraries’ cooked up hot dogs, provided beverages and were available to answer inquires regarding library events and memberships.
‘We love the library,’ Wanda Druzba, Douglassville, said as to why she was volunteering for the day. ‘We’re trying to raise money for the libraries. They make use a stronger community.’
All proceeds from the event were directed to the Boone Area Library and the Exeter Community Library.
‘From the hot dog sale alone, we raised $177.50 and donations were around $35,’ Nicole English, Boscov’s Department Store, said.
In addition to the libraries, the Exeter Township Fire Department and Exeter Ambulance Association offered safety tips, tours of the fire trucks and ambulances and information for fire prevention.
‘We want to raise awareness for children,’ Tim Fox, Exeter Twp. Fire Department, explained. Firemen presented equipment for children to learn ‘to not be afraid of it.’
The department gave demonstrations on how to use fire extinguishers and provided information promoting Stovetop Firestop, an automatic fire suppression for the stove, to stop a stovetop fire immediately after it ignites.
Firemen explained about safety tips to prevent winter fires as many fires happen during the cold months as people are taking measures, often using kerosene heaters on carpeting, to stay warm. Additional information can be found at usfa.fema.gov. Pens, pencils, plastic pink and black firemen’s hats and tot finder stickers were up for grabs.
Exeter Ambulance was also present, informing the community about their services, classes and fundraising efforts.
‘Memberships are quite a good deal,’ Kaitlyn Crammer, Exeter Ambulance Association, said. Each year residents pay for a fee for the membership. If they need the use of an ambulance, the membership covers the remaining amount due after insurance.
School supplies donations were also accepted in the lobby for Lorane Elementary School.
