The Hamburg area community took a moment to recognize and thank active and retired armed forces personnel at halftime during the Sept. 5 football game against Annville Cleona for the fourth Armed Forces Recognition Night.

“Armed Forces Day is officially celebrated nationwide on the third Saturday in May,” said the announcer during the recognition ceremony. “However, tonight on Hawk Hill we celebrate in our own way by recognizing all active and retired members of our armed forces. Let us salute the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coastguardsmen who perform their duties with impeccable courage, commitment and character.”

Each member’s name was announced along with their service while they stepped forward to be recognized by the home crowd. After each person was recognized, the crowd stood up with a loud round of applause. The Hamburg Area Chamber Singers then performed “God Bless America.”

“I’ve always been awed by the bravery and commitment of people in the military,” said Aaron Menapace, athletic director, a few weeks prior to the night. “I just decided a few years ago that it would be an appropriate venue to recognize all those who defend the freedoms we enjoy.”

As military personnel waited for the clock to tick down to halftime, they gathered near the end zone. In that time, many could be seen shaking hands and introducing themselves to their fellow armed forces members. Around the stands, students were seen approaching the active and retired members to give them a “thank you” for serving the country and protecting our freedom.

“I believe our students respect the Armed Forces and as such react positively to the event. I believe everyone at the school is appreciative of the event. There are two pieces of the event that I really enjoy,” said Menapace. “First, that we appropriately recognize the courageous men and women who sign on to protect the United States. Secondly, the amazement and interest the students have in the equipment and soldiers has always put a smile on my face.”

Before and during the game, military personnel were set up with information at the entrance of the stadium and were even holding a pull-up contest throughout the night.

It was another successful Armed Forces Recognition Night for Hamburg with a good turnout of active and retired military personnel taking a moment to be recognized and honored on Hawk Hill.
