When the residents of The Heritage of Green Hills, a healthy living community in Shillington, decided to learn more about recycling, they went all out.

After learning about recycling from a waste services company representative and visiting a recycling facility and a landfill, residents held their own recycling event: a Recycled Clothing Fashion Show. All the fashions were purchased at Reading-area consignment shops, with a limit of $20 for each ensemble.

The Heritage of Green Hills promotes Eight Dimensions of Wellness: intellectual, physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, vocational and health services. According to Cheryl Anderson, community life services director at The Heritage, the recycling event contributed to the intellectual, social and environmental dimensions of residents’ wellness. “Protecting our environment is vitally important – but recycling can be intellectually stimulating and fun, too.”

The community’s recycling focus began with a presentation on recycling and recycling trends by Christy Bliss, account manager at Republic Services, a waste and recycling company. Residents also visited a recycling facility and a landfill site in King of Prussia.

But the highlight of the community’s recycling focus was the Recycled Clothing Fashion Show. Eight female residents of The Heritage visited local consignment and second-hand shops to purchase clothing items for a competitive fashion show held at The Heritage. The winner of the show had the purchase price of her ensemble paid for. The winner, by vote of other residents, was Margie Clark, who spent $19.11 on her outfit.
