We all know that shopping locally helps support our local economy and communities.

Most of us are more than willing to do it, but with our hectic lifestyles who has the time to search out the really great shops? Melissa Nordhoff, creator of the Best Kept Secrets Tour, spends four weeks twice a year getting lost on the back roads of Berks County to find unusual, interesting tucked away surprises to share with you. She also meets with all of the owners to make sure that when you visit you will have a welcoming, pleasant experience.

The Tour is a shopping/food and fun adventure that features 37 fantastic, hand-picked, diverse businesses. There really is something for everyone . . . unusual home, garden & gift stores housed in restored barns or stone mills and beautiful historic homes, a surprising Christmas Shoppe, local favorite restaurants, cafes and a historic hotel tavern built in 1820s, an alpaca farm where you can interact with the animals, huge garden centers, artists’ studios, food & wine shops and farmer’s markets that offer plentiful samples, vintage & upcycled shops, antique stores, jewelry stores, florals, boutiques, locally and globally made handcrafts and the list goes on!

The businesses are mostly small and owned by fantastically talented people–truly the backbone of our economy. They are excited to share their knowledge and talents. A visit with them is an experience rather than just an anonymous shopping trip.

To further the Best Kept Secrets Tour’s goal of supporting the community, $1 per tour is donated to a local charity. Over $11,000 has been given back in Berks County so far. Money from the upcoming Nov 7th through Nov 22nd Tour will benefit The Berks Counseling Center. So not only does your participation boost the local economy, it also helps a local non-profit and hopefully gives you a great day or two out with friends and family. Who knew shopping could be so important!
