The Jewish Women’s League of Congregation Hesed Shel Emet announces its annual Rummage Sale, Flea Market and Bake Sale to be held on Sunday, Nov. 2 & Monday, Nov. 3, 2014.

The Jewish Women’s League’s earliest sales were held in storefronts rented in downtown Pottstown for the sale. The Congregation built its current home at 575 N. Keim Street in 1962, and the Rummage Sale was moved to the large social hall in that building a couple years later. “That was around 1964,” said Janet Prince, “and we have held it there every year since. We don’t really know exactly what year the Sale was started, but it has definitely been a Pottstown tradition for well over 50 years.” Mrs. Prince has served as chairperson of the event for a good portion of its existence, as well as serving several terms as the Jewish Women’s League president, and most recently, president of the congregation from 2010-2014.

The “Flea Market” portion, with household goods and other “hard goods” was added in the early 1970s, and has been overseen by Laurie Borger ever since. “My history is with the flea market which Sylvia Sanft and I started as an add-on in the very early 70s,” recalls Mrs. Borger. “The first year, Myrna Rawdin was in charge of the flowers and plants. We also had craftsman. This went on for several years. We had trucks and drivers donated for pickup and delivery back then. We have had everything from a vintage Hoosier cabinet to original art. It changes from year to year so it’s always a delightful surprise for us too.”

This year, shoppers can expect to find clothing, shoes, linens, household items, small appliances, books, handbags, kitchenware, holiday items, and of course, baked goods at the bake sale.

The Rummage Sale, Flea Market and Bake Sale is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Jewish Women’s League. The JWL supports Congregation Hesed Shel Emet as an auxiliary, providing funding for children’s education programming, food for special events and holidays, and building operating costs.

The Rummage Sale will be held Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Monday, Nov. 3, 2014 from 9 a.m. – noon, at Congregation Hesed Shel Emet, 575 N Keim Street in Pottstown.
