A Bethel woman was taken into custody by Pennsylvania State Police on the criminal charges of Criminal Attempt/Murder of the 1st degree, Aggravated Assault (three counts), Simple Assault and Endangering the Welfare of Children for an incident that occurred on Oct. 22 involving a 14-month-old victim.
Pennsylvania State Police Hamburg received a report of a suspected child abuse incident from Berks County Children & Youth Services on Oct. 23 at approximately 2:15 p.m. The alleged incident occurred in the 500 block of Frystown Road in Bethel. It was reported that the 14-month-old victim was being treated at Hershey Medical Center for a severe head injury consisting of bleeding on the brain.
While examining and treating the child, medical personnel believed the head injury sustained was not consistent with the fall that was described by the child’s babysitter Lisa Elaine Weiler, 32, of Bethel, who was watching the victim when the alleged incident occurred on Oct. 22 at 12 p.m.
Pennsylvania State Police conducted an investigation into the incident. During the investigation it was discovered that the victim’s injuries were a direct result of physical abuse inflicted on the victim by the accused, Weiler. The victim suffered traumatic head injuries resulting from the assault and remains in critical condition.
Weiler was taken into custody on the criminal charges of Criminal Attempt/Murder of the 1st degree, Aggravated Assault (three counts), Simple Assault and Endangering the Welfare of Children. She was arraigned on the charges before District Judge Gail Greth. Bail was set at $500,000 straight.
