“Fall is now upon us, I hope you and your family have adjusted well to the new school year. It is the time of year where the leaves are changing, the cool breeze is blowing, and pumpkin coffee is flowing. It is also time for the kids to be picking out their favorite Halloween costumes.

Central Berks Regional Police have a few tips for you and your family to have a fun and safe time trick-or-treating:

– Make sure an adult is with anyone under the age of 16, if older kids are going in a group.

– Set a time for them to be home or follow them at a safe but not embarrassing distance.

– Wear light colored or reflective type clothing so you are more visible

– Use face paint rather than masks or things that cover your eyes.

– Cross the street only at the corners.

– Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks and low flying brooms.

– Don’t hide or cross the street between parked cars.

– Walk on the sidewalks, not in the street.

– Carry a flashlight to light your way.

– Only visit homes that have the porch light on.

– Accept your treats at the door and never go into a stranger’s house.

– Respect other people’s properties.

– Have a grown-up inspect your treats before eating and do not eat candy if the package is already opened.

– Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.

– Do not forget to say ‘THANK YOU.’

Thank you, have a great time trick-or-treating!”
