Sunoco marks the first decade of its popular Free Fuel 5000 contest by giving out $5,000 Grand Prizes to 10 lucky customers from across the country.

The Free Fuel 5000 contest was established in 2004 as a way to reward Sunoco’s most loyal customers. To participate, drivers simply need to display a Sunoco bumper sticker on their vehicle, fill up at any Sunoco station, and hope to be spotted with their Sunoco decal between the months of June and August. Drivers who are spotted instantly win a $10 gift card and are entered to win the Grand Prize of $5,000 in Sunoco gift cards.

This year’s contest included a diverse group of winners, spanning from Connecticut and Michigan to South Carolina and Florida.

Harold Hetrick, 80, has been farming his 175 acres in Oley, for 56 years. There’s been little time for vacation and luck has been something for other people.

“When it comes to luck, that’s not my game,” he said. “I’ve never been lucky.”

So was it luck that landed Harold Hetrick Sunoco’s Free Fuel 5000 Grand Prize of $5,000 in fuel, or was it dedication?

After all, Harold said he buys an average of $100 a day in Sunoco gasoline and diesel for his truck and combine. And he has three trucks with Sunoco stickers on them, so he was bound to be spotted at Sunoco one day. And so he was this summer, and today he collected his prize at his favorite Sunoco station.

As a farmer who depends on his machinery, Harold Hetrick values quality fuel.

“You put it in the vehicle every day, it runs better than a lot of other fuels I’ve used in my life,” he said.

As for plans, Hetrick said he will be working the farm “until they carry me out of here feet-first.”

Ever since he found about the prize, however, he has been plotting a vacation. He has five sons, 22 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren – the family reunions are not small. So he has been dreaming of visiting his son in Florida, and granddaughters in California, Chicago and Texas.

Here’s to bringing the family together, Mr. Hetrick, with Sunoco helping you get there! Congratulations!

The Free Fuel 5000 contest is Sunoco’s signature promotion and has increased in popularity each year since it began in 2004.

“After 10 years, customer enthusiasm continues to grow,” said Drew Kabakoff, director of marketing. “We are proud and grateful to every loyal driver who displays the Sunoco decal.”
