Pennsylvania Department of Transportation representatives presented plans for Route 222 during a public open house at Fleetwood High School Dec. 17.

“PennDOT was invited by Sen. Argall and Sen. Schwank to attend the meeting to discuss safety along the US 222 corridor and present our plans for upcoming construction projects,” said Sean Brown, Safety Press Officer, PA Department of Transportation, Engineering District 5.

Brown wrote in an email to The Patriot that PennDOT has several projects along the Route 222 corridor that are at different stages of design. Three projects will be addressing intersections on US 222 and two projects will be looking at widening of the mainline US 222.

“We are designing intersection improvements to the following intersections. US 222 and PA 662, US 222 and Schafers Road, US 222 and Tamarack Road/Genesis Drive, US 222 and PA 73, and US 222 and Long Lane. Improvements include roundabouts and at some intersections and widening with additional turn lane at others,” wrote Brown.

“Details of the widening projects have yet to be determined but the areas that we are looking include the section of US 222 in Maidencreek and Richmond townships and also US 222 in Maxatawny Township,” he wrote.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss some of the safety concerns with US 222, according to Brown.

“We discussed how we will be addressing some of those concerns in the short term and long term with our PennDOT projects,” wrote Brown.

The US 222/PA 662 Intersection Project has an estimated construction cost of $3.7 million with an estimated start date of Sumer 2015, according to Brown.

The US 222/Shafers, Tamarack, PA 73 Intersections Project has an estimated construction cost of $ 12.5 million, with an estimated start date of 2017.

The US 222/Long Lane estimated construction cost is $6.5 million, and estimated start date of late 2017.

“The US 222 Widening cost and time frame for construction will be determined during the design process,” wrote Brown.
