The Berks County District Attorney’s office and county coroner are investigating after a property owner reported finding skeletal remains in a field off Monocacy Creek Road Tuesday morning.

According to a press release from the District Attorney’s office, the remains were discovered Monday, but not reported until about 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The county forensics unit was called to the scene along with the coroner, who was investigating in the isolated section of the property where the remains were located.

The District Attorney’s office forensic unit and the coroner were inspecting the scene where the remains were found. Sgt. Robert Johnson of the forensic unit explained that investigators carefully comb the scene in case evidence of anything sinister turns up during the autopsy.

“Nothing jumps out to make anyone think that’s the issue,” Johnson said when asked if there was anything at the scene to suggest foul play.

Because of decomposition, exposure to the elements and several other factors, Johnson said the age and gender of the body, or how long it had been in the field, could not be determined prior to an autopsy.

A forensic pathologist would determine if any identifying features can be found and if the body had sustained any trauma, Johnson said.

The remains will be transported to the Reading Hospital and Medical Center where an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 31 at noon, according to the release from the District Attorney’s office.
