Historic Pottsgrove Manor will offer a two-part sewing workshop on making “An Eighteenth Century Pinball” on Saturday, Feb. 14, and Saturday, March 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.
No, it’s not the kind of pinball one might see in an arcade – this pinball is a type of pincushion that was popular in colonial Pennsylvania, worn suspended by a ribbon or chain from a woman’s waistband. In this hands-on workshop, Museum Educator Lynn Symborski will teach students to make a needlepoint pinball.
At the first session, she will give a history of these pincushions and their various forms. Students will choose a needlework pattern to decorate their pinball and get started working the design in colorful wool thread on canvas. Students will complete the needlepoint on their own between the classes, and the second session will teach students how to cut out and assemble their pinball.
This workshop is open to adults and children ages 14 and up. There is a materials fee of $125 per person. The workshop fee covers all materials (including a reproduction sterling silver ring for holding the pinball, made by Ward Oles of At the Eastern Door), instructions and lunch for both sessions.
Participants must attend both sessions. In order to ensure individual instruction, class size is limited to eight. The registration form is available at the site, or can be downloaded online at: http://montcopa.org/DocumentCenter/View/8166.
Registration and payment are required by Feb. 1. Cancellation policy: Due to the nature of this workshop, Pottsgrove Manor cannot offer a full refund for cancellations. Cancellations given before Feb. 1 will be refunded 60 percent of the materials fee. Cancellations given after Feb. 1 will not be refunded.
