AMITY >> One person was found dead in Amity Sunday morning, Jan. 25, after two burning cars were extinguished on the 800 block of Antietam Drive, according to police.

Chief Detective Michael Gombar of Berks County said that information on the deceased would not be released until the autopsy was performed, which was scheduled for Sunday night.

Police and fire arrived on the cul-de-sac shortly after 8 a.m. to put out a blaze that engulfed two vehicles in a driveway. It wasn’t until the flames had died out that emergency responders found a body in the driver’s seat of one of the vehicles, Gombar said.

“The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. So was the other one,” Gombar said.

The Berks County District Attorney’s Major Crimes Unit and Amity Police are investigating the incident together. The cause of the fire is still being investigated, Gombar said. The Berks County Coroner and Amity Fire and Rescue were also on the scene.
