Reading Area Community College’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society will receive a $500 award as part of its selection as a 2014 Honors Case Study Challenge award winner by the national Phi Theta Kappa office. Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges.

Chapter President Dana Stout and member Janelle Zimmerman co-chaired RACC’s Challenge committee. Additional committee members are Cherylann McGuire, Carla Moyer and Raquel Almodovar.

The case study had to be related to the Honors Study Topic, Frontiers and the Spirit of Exploration, and focused more specifically on one of the suggested themes within that topic. RACC’s chapter has been focusing on the theme “Health and Medicine as Frontiers.”

The students selected newspaper articles and wrote a summary, an essay, and discussion questions on their topic. As part of their research, they met with Kim Rivera, director of Girls on the Run – Berks County, to learn more about their program. This helped RACC shape its challenge entry to focus on how healthy habits being implemented at a young age can lead to an overall healthy lifestyle.

Additional youth mentoring programs including the Olivet Boys and Girls Club and Big Brothers/Big Sisters were also mentioned in the final case study.
