A driver was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Berks County after colliding into two trees at a high rate of speed Tuesday, Jan. 10 police said.

The crash happened around 10 a.m. along Route 344 North of Hopewell Road in French Creek State Park.

The victim has been identified as 47-year-old Donald Paul Hannum of Birdsboro.

Hannum was traveling southbound alone inside his 2004 Ford Escape SUV and went too fast into a curve in the road and hit the trees, according to state police at the Reading barracks.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:18 a.m., according to authorities.

Weather did not play a factor in the accident, according to the preliminary investigation.

“It wasn’t ice related,” Berks County Deputy Coroner Gretchen Weyandt confirmed. “It looks like speed was a factor.”

Weyandt said Hannum suffered multiple blunt force injuries and the crash was ruled accidental.
