25 Years AgoFeb. 21, 1990 >> Thomas C. Miller, retired businessman, died February 17 in the dispensary of Reading Hospital. Self-employed, Miller had been the owner and operator of T.C. Miller Concrete and Construction Company, Hamburg, from 1945 to until 1987, when he sold the business. He was a retired forest fire warden, having served 25 years.

Marcia Sonon, RD1 Lenhartsville, is on the fall semester Distinguished Students List at Purdue University, where she is majoring in Computer Technology.

Jennifer Sunday, Hamburg graduate of 1989, has been named to the Dean’s List at Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Sunday, RD1, Lenhartsville.

50 Years AgoFeb. 18, 1965 >> The Hamburg Rotary Club will hold its annual Father-Son-Daughter banquet at the Regal Hotel at 6:30 p.m., today.

Blue Mt. Academy rules the six-team Y.M.C.A. Adult Volleyball League with a 6-and-0 slate. The Academy ball tappers topped Albright Insurance 15-9, 15-9, and 15-7, last Thursday night.

A new A&P Food Store will open its doors in Hamburg at 9 p.m., net Tuesday morning. It is located at the intersection of North Fourth Street with Port Clinton Ae and Franklin Street, in the building formerly occupied by Becker’s Super Market.

Air Force Capt. Kenneth R. Degler returned to the United States last week after a month of flying duty in the Viet Nam area. Captain Degler pilots a C-135, four engine jet transport used by the Military Air Transportation Service (MATS). He had been transporting equipment and troops for 30 days in connection with an airlift in support of operations in Southeast Asia. He brought wounded G.I’s and the bodies of American servicemen killed in Viet Nam along on his return flight to this country last week. He spent part of Thursday and Friday visiting with his parent’s, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond E. Degler.

75 Years AgoFeb. 16, 1940 >> The first car load of new Ford tractors arrived in Hamburg last week and were lined up on South Fourth Street, opposite Schlenker Motor Co., local distributors. “On the Farm” demonstrations will be held as soon as possible.

Hamburg’s newest store, the F.&F. Shop, opened its doors on Monday afternoon at Third and State Streets under the proprietorship of Paul Fink and Dr. L.W. Fink. The interior has been completely renovated, a new lighting system installed. Cigars, Tobaccos, Candies, soft drinks, popcorn, peanuts and novelties comprise the line at the present time. Saturday will mark the formal opening day.

“The Nest”, at Third and State Streets, a new basement rendezvous, done in high school colors, will be opened at noon Saturday.

Drifts as high as 10 feet resulted from yesterday’s gale and snowstorm, said to have been the worst to visit this section since 1888. Marooned travelers filled local hotels. More than a thousand workers were said to have been called to duty on the state highways alone.

100 Years AgoFeb. 18, 1915 >> On Saturday, William L. Kiefer, manufacturer of Reading completed the erection of a complete fire escape at the Central Hotel, and contemplates beginning work this week on one at the four-story Confer building, which the upper floor has been converted into a lodge hall.

Wentz & Bubbenmoyer, proprietor of the Monarch Roller Mill, Bern, will dissolve partnership on April first. Mr. Bubbenmoyer will retire from the milling business and will devote his time attending to the Fisher Farm, of which he is the tenant for the last eight years. Charles D. Henne, who for a number of years was employed by the Berne Dairy Co., will take Mr. Bubbenmoyer’s place in the Monarch Milling Company and associate himself with Mr. Wentz.

Co E is making extensive preparations for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the organization of the company next Monday evening in the Armory.
