25 Years AgoMarch 21, 1990 >> The March 22 meeting of the Woman’s Club of Hamburg will feature “Girl Scout Memories” in recognition of the 68th anniversary of the founding of Girl Scouting in Hamburg. Margaret Judd is chairman of the program, assisted by Mary Schappell.
Lester George, president of the Hamburg Citizens Crime Watch, presented a plaque to Roger Stetzler, who founded the organization and served as its president for six years.
50 Years AgoMarch 18, 1965 >> William Gundrum was elected president of Hamburg’s Jr. Chamber of Commerce at a business meeting held in the Jaycee’s Hall last Friday night.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bender, of the Society Cleaners, 216 South Fourth Street, Hamburg, spent the weekend in Atlantic City, NJ. They were among the 25,000 persons who attended a dry cleaner’s convention.
Nolan E. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nevin E. Miller, of 55 North Fourth Street, Hamburg, is presently on an 8,000 mile tour of 18 states with the Chicago Little Symphony Orchestra.
The first place prize of $15.00 in the Hamburg Recreation Board Auxiliary’s annual talent show held last Saturday night went to Folk singing duet Richard Machemer of Centerport, and Mary Seianna, of Laureldale.
75 Years AgoMarch 14, 1940 >> Local service clubs aided the visiting nurse in her welfare work in the community during the past month, according to the report of Mrs. Evelyn Raudenbush. The Hamburg Rotary Club purchased an artificial eye for one needy individual and the Exchange Club will sponsor the purchase of a pair of glasses for a deserving child.
Alexander L. Rentschler, Tilden Twp., has been named first alternate to fill an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy by Congressman Guy L. Moser. Rentschler was salutatorian of the class of 1939, Hamburg High School.
“I Take This Woman,” starring Spencer Tracy and Hedy Lamarr will be featured at the Strand on March 19 & 20.
100 Years AgoMarch 18, 1915 >> Miss Flora T. Evans, milliner on South Third Street, Hamburg, will take possession of the Luburg building on State Street, and after a thorough renovation will equip it in modern style for her opening of Spring Millinery.
Mrs. E.C. Stitzel, milliner on South Fourth Street, Hamburg, announces her spring display of the latest in trimmed millinery on Saturday, March 29th.
Wilson E. Schmeck, of the Hamburg Broom Works, is offering at private sale the lot of ground on North Second Street, known as the boatyard property.
W.F. Fredericks, late steward at the Blue Mountain Club House, resigned last week and returned to Reading on Monday. He is succeeded by Eugene Ely, who served in the same capacity very successfully several years ago. Mrs. Ely was famed for the splendid table service under her husband’s stewardship.
