Twin Valleys Garden Club recently competed at the international 2015 Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Philadelphia Flower Show.

This year’s theme was “Celebrate the Movies.” The Club received a second place ribbon for its rich tablescape tableau celebrating the 30th anniversary of the landmark movie “Out of Africa.”

Members created a 10′ x 12′ colonial coffee plantation porch, set for formal dining around a commanding arrangement of orange and pink native African protea and tall savannah grasses. The Club also captured the coveted class Maintenance Award for superior daily efforts to keep the display in pristine condition throughout the Show.

Sharp-eyed show visitors discovered the surprise of the head of a crouching lion, crafted by TVGC’s Carol Heilner from all natural leaves, grasses and pods, hidden within the arrangement. Judges praised the club’s theme choice “European Dining Amid African Splendor,” sophisticated setting, and the colors of an African sunset painted on the backdrop by TVGC member and local artist Debbie Kuhn.

While competing successfully at the world’s oldest and largest indoor flower show is one challenge taken on by TVGC this year, other gardening programs and community projects ahead include “John Bartram, the King’s Gardener” to be presented cooperatively by TVGC and the Chester County Library System, Landscaping and Watershed Management, and exploring our “Food and Feathers” ecosystems.

An upcoming workshop will teach members and guests how to create succulent wreaths. The Club plans a spring walking tour of the Barnes Foundation arboretum.

Some 20 members from the greater Chester Springs area meet monthly to share gardening tips, create flower arrangements and offer horticulture specimens which are informally judged by fellow members.
