Two Kutztown Borough Police officers were presented the Life Saving Award for their actions this past December that helped save a 21-year-old’s life.
Kutztown Mayor Sandy Green and Kutztown Police Chief Craig Summers presented Officer Arthur Hirsch and Officer William Wyandt with the Life Saving Award during Kutztown Borough Council’s meeting on March 17.
On Dec. 3, 2014, the officers were the first to arrive at a scene where a 21 year old suffered a heart attack. They performed CPR and rescue procedures until the ambulance arrived. Thanks in large part to their efforts, the 21 year old survived without any damaging side effects.
Wyandt was also presented with the Officer of the Year Award. According to Summers, Wyandt led the department in arrests, DUI arrests and stopped a burglary in progress in 2014.
In other news, Council unanimously approved a proposed crosswalk upgrade on College Boulevard at Kutztown University’s Honors Hall.
Carol Sztaba, the University architect in the Facilities Department, presented the proposed changes to the Council. The current crosswalk at the Fairgrounds lot will be relocated close to the vehicular entrance to the Fairgrounds across from the University’s Honors Hall.
“We believe this would be a safer crosswalk for our college students,” Sztaba said of the change.
In addition to improved safety, the new crosswalk location would provide better handicap access. Work on the crosswalk was proposed to start on May 11 and will be completed no later than two weeks before the Kutztown Folk Festival, according to Sztaba.
The next Council meeting will take place on April 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Train Station.
