50 Years AgoMarch 25, 1965 >> Both the Lutheran and United Church of Christ Congregations date back to 1790 when steps were taken to build a log church and school house on land deeded for the purpose by Martin Kaercher Sr., when Hamburg was founded in 1773. The log church with union congregation dating from 1790 was known as St. John’s of Hamburg. The first church was erected on the present old St. John’s Cemetery at the southeast corner where Church Street intersects with Pine. A second church of stone was erected in 1811 on the site of the present St. John’s Lutheran Church, and a third of brick was erected in 1857. The three churches were all known as St. John’s Church of Hamburg. In 1898 when a disastrous fire destroyed the Bicycle Works in Hamburg, burning embers carried by the wind also set fire to the roof of the church and reduced the edifice to smoldering wreckage in a few hours. Shortly after the fire, the congregations decided to separate. The Lutheran group prepared to stay and purchase the interests of the Reformed congregation while the latter decided to purchase the lot at the corner of Third and Pine Streets and erect First Reformed Church.
