State Police respond to bomb threat at Berks County Jail System on Monday

Pennsylvania State Police-Reading reported that a threatening phone call was received at the Berks County Jail System in the 1200 block of County Welfare Rd. in Bern Township on Monday, March 23 at approximately 1 p.m. Shortly after the first call, a second phone call was received indicating that there was a bomb located on the property. Both phone calls were made by an anonymous person.

The Pennsylvania State Police-Reading Station was notified of both calls. Members of the Criminal Investigation Unit responded to begin and investigation. The Berks County Sheriff’s Department, York County Sheriff’s Department and Chester County Sheriff’s Department provided K9 Units to conduct a check of the property. The Reading City Police Bomb Squad also responded and provided additional detection resources. The area was deemed secure on Monday, March 23 at approximately 4:45 p.m.
