25 Years AgoApril 11, 1990 >> The days are numbered until Arlan Fink and his brother Norman will retire and the S.A. Fink & Sons Grocery Store will close. The Fink brothers have been managing the corner grocery since 1948. The brothers plan to take life easier after they retire. Norman would like to travel and Arlan wants to spend more time fishing.
The 225th anniversary committee of Shoemakersville will hold their Queen and Princess pageant Saturday, April 28 at the Perry Elementary School in Shoemakersville.
50 Years AgoApril 8, 1965 >> A local boy has been selected to travel with the Glee Club of the Milton Hershey School when it makes its annual spring tours. He is John David Schneider, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Berger, of Port Clinton Avenue, Hamburg. Dave, 16, is a sophomore taking the vocational curriculum with a major in printing.
Miss Carol Ann Zimmerman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Zimmerman, of Centerport, has completed her six-month period of pre-clinical instruction in the Reading Hospital School of Nursing.

75 Years AgoApril 4, 1940 >> Interesting historical facts and genial Pennsylvania-German humor featured a dinner in the Hotel Washington last Sunday afternoon when The Hamburg Item was host to employees, correspondents, and other guests to commemorate the local weekly newspaper’s founding by Samuel A. Focht, 65 years ago. Following a Berks County turkey dinner, Editor-Publisher Millard A. Stofflet introduced
G. Gilbert Snyder of Robesonia, the Pennsylvania-German radio humorist, better known as “Die Wunnernaus” who employed the dialect while serving as toastmaster for the occasion. The first guest speaker was Attorney Harvey F. Heinly of Reading, brother of William O. Heinly, editor-publisher of the Item during 44 years of its development. B.A. Fryer of Wyomissing, The Item’s “Penn Square” for the past 39 years, paid tribute to the weekly newspaper’s intimate appeal to readers of this section.
Miss Arlene Seaman, 232 Pine Street, Hamburg is included on the Dean’s List of honor students for the first semester at West Chester State Teacher’s College. She is a sophomore there.

100 Years AgoApril 8, 1915 >> Clark Saylor, who last week sold his beautiful home on South Fourth Street, Hamburg, began digging for the foundation walls of a new home to be erected on the adjoining lot.
Adam Bodenhorn of Reading was here on Monday, accompanied by an architect, to view his lot on Fifth Street, Hamburg, upon which he contemplates building a handsome residence.
Perhaps the busiest industry in Hamburg at present is the Hahn Motor Truck and Wagon Company. During the past few weeks orders for nine more auto trucks were booked, which now makes a total of 15 trucks, upon which work has not yet begun. The company has at present ten trucks on the floor in process of completion.
Oscar Stine, who as one of the heirs of the late Benneville Stein sold the latter’s farm to the state for the sanatorium, last week took possession of the Daniel Saul farm at Shoemakersville, which he purchased recently.
