Fans young and old gathered at the Boyertown Area High School Thursday night, April 9, to get a glimpse of a known athlete whose roots began in the same place as theirs.

James Develin, New England Patriots fullback, returned to Boyertown for the first time since graduating in 2006 to give words of encouragement and motivation to anyone with a dream.

“I’m here to tell you that as long as you never quit and keep working hard, anything is possible,” said Develin. “Don’t ever give up if you have dreams.”

After graduating Boyertown in 2006, Develin went on to Brown University where he earned a degree in medical engineering and continued to play football. Even though he wasn’t drafted right from school, Develin continued to play arena football where he eventually joined the practice squad of the Cincinnati Bengals. He then joined the New England Patriots where he got to experience winning the Super Bowl Championship earlier this year.

Faculty and coaches commended Develin’s determination and achievements.

“He is the perfect role model for any young athlete…on the field and in the classroom,” said Superintendent Dr. Richard Faidley.

Former head football coach, Ron Zeiber, presented Develin with his old Boyertown jersey. “Character involves work ethic and a leadership role, which Jimmy had from the beginning,” said Zeiber. Also unveiled was a banner to be hung in the gymnasium honoring Develin as a Super Bowl champion.

“I am so blessed. It’s an incredible thing to experience,” said Develin.

Afterwards, Develin stayed to sign autographs and take pictures with his admiring fans.
