25 Years AgoApril 18, 1990 >> Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brackman, formerly of West Hamburg, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at a dinner given by their children at Wegman’s Reeser Restaurant.

Dorothy Hoppes, of Pennsylvania National Bank presented a check to Sheryle Delewski, manager of the Hamburg Recreation Center. The money will be used toward the peer helper program at the teen center.

Aaron Williamson, a senior at Hamburg, was named to the McDonald’s All-American “Top 100” senior list. Williamson was the leading scorer in Berks County averaging 26.3 points per game. He ended his career with 2,012 points, best in Hamburg history and third best in the County.

50 Years AgoApril 15, 1965 >> Dr. Clifford C. Wagner, of 72 North Fourth Street, Hamburg, was installed as president of the Berks County Optometric Society on Saturday night in the Wyomissing Club of Reading.

May Day activities will be held in conjunction with the annual Spring Concert at Hamburg Area High School on May 7. Karen Wengert will reign as May Queen.

Clair A. Tinklepaugh, trustee, will install the newly-elected officers of Hamburg Lodge No. 523, Loyal Order of Moose, on Monday at 8 p.m., in the South Third Street lodge hall.

Members of the Senior Home Economics Club and of the Library Clubs at Hamburg Area High School sponsored a tea party for members of the faculty, administration and all other school personnel in the home-economics suite last Tuesday afternoon.

Marine Private James P. Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth P. Adams of 224 South Fourth Street, Hamburg, completed four weeks of individual combat training on March 17 with the First Infantry Training Regiment, Marine Corps Base, Lejeune, N.C.

“Dear Brigitte” starring James Stewart with Fabian and Glynis Johns will be featured at the Strand on April 17 only.

75 Years AgoApril 11, 1940 >> Beautiful walls of tool-dressed native mountain stone are receiving the unanimous praise of visitors to Hamburg’s new Post Office, opposite the Public Library and the North Third Street Grade School, since scaffolding was removed from the exterior of the building last week.

Mrs. Harry V. Burkey was named president of the Woman’s Club of Hamburg at the April meeting in the former Moose auditorium last Thursday evening.

Local Sports enthusiasts, parents, and members of the Exchange Club will play host this evening to the Hamburg High School Varsity Basketball Squad at a public testimonial dinner to be held at the Regal Hotel at 7:30 p.m.

Over 950 different articles and $68.57 in cash were collected last Thursday evening by members of Behler-Hein Post No 637, American Legion, for Susquehanna flood victims in the Sunbury area.

Miss Helen Louise Meharg returned to Wellesley College on Monday after spending the spring vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Meharg.

“Strange Cargo” staring Clark Gable and Joan Crawford will be featured at the Strand on April 13.

100 Years AgoApril 15, 1915 >> J.A. Bausher is at present preparing a tennis court and croquet grounds at the two bungalows on his farm in Tilden Twp., preparatory to the summer season, which will open on Memorial Day, when the first party of boarders will arrive.

At the special meeting of town council on Monday three bids were opened to supply nearly 20,000 gallons of oil with which to sprinkle all the streets in Hamburg. The contract was awarded to the Crew-Levick Company, and it is expected that the work will be done within two weeks.
