Thanks to 15-year-old Tyler Geschwindt and his vision, Salem-Berne Church in Tilden Townhip now has its very own ga-ga pit. Tyler was first introduced to the game at church camp and has loved it ever since.
Ga-ga, literally meaning “touch-touch,” is a variant of school yard dodge ball. It combines dodging, striking, running and jumping with the object of hitting opponents with a ball below the knee while avoiding being hit. The ball is hit and not thrown and can be played one-on-one, in groups or in teams. There are also additional rules that apply to the game. What makes this game unusual is that it is played in a large octagonal pit which consists of flat walls mounted upon a smooth surface.
After seeking church approval, candy sales and monetary donations, Tyler’s vision of creating an outreach to other youth in the community was set in motion. Plans for building the ga-ga pit were drawn up by Tyler’s father, Daren who also supervised the project. After 212 man hours of labor by congregational members, construction was completed in August 2014.
A dedication service was held and members had the chance to participate in the game. The ga-ga pit has since been utilized by Sunday School classes, family reunions, Youth Group and for after church fun.
Plan are currently underway for the very first Ga-ga Youth Event to be held May 3 from 2 to 7 p.m. There will be free hotdogs and drinks, a DJ, plus other activities. For more information on this event, please contact Pastor Daniel Herner at 570-739-4010.
