25 Years AgoMay 2, 1990 >> Evelyn Kister, 69 year member of the Woman’s Club of Hamburg, received her service award from Berks Federation of Woman’s Clubs.

Carl Peiffer, president of Peiffer-Degler Chevrolet Inc., Hamburg, was recently awarded the 1989 Community Sales Leadership award from Fred Price, Chevrolet Branch manager.

50 Years AgoApril 29, 1965 >> Miss Linda Jane Fritz, 19-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Fritz Sr., of Leesport, was chosen Miss Berks County of 1965 at the annual pageant held in Governor Mifflin Joint High School, Shillington.

Merritt Alexander, jeweler, 45 South Fourth Street, Hamburg, has become a Registered Jeweler, by the American Gem Society.

Miss Linda Neuin has been named Centennial Queen of Strausstown. She will also represent this borough in the Berks County Fire Queen contest to be held in Leesport in June

75 Years AgoApril 25, 1940 >> J. A. Naftzinger, progressive Centerport merchant, has made extensive plans to celebrate his 40th anniversary in business. Starting tomorrow, he is staging a customer’s jubilee for the thousands of furniture patrons he has served during the last four decades.

Don Rose, famous columnist, humorist and essay writer of the Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger, will be the guest speaker at the May meeting of the Woman’s Club of Hamburg in the former Moose auditorium, South Fourth Street, at 7:45 p.m., next Thursday evening.

An old-fashioned funnel cake and roast beef dinner will be served in St. Luke’s Church on May 18.

William Fister, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bright Fister, left on Tuesday to serve a six-year enlistment in the U.S. NAVY.

“Grapes of Wrath” starring Henry Fonda and Doris Bowdon will be featured at the Strand on April 27.

100 Years AgoApril 29, 1915 >> Claude Weidman of Berne, has the contract to paint the store and dwelling home of O.L. Lesher of Shartlesville.

The farmers of the Windsor Castle vicinity are taking potatoes to Reading, which they will sell at 50 to 65 cents a bushel.

Contractor A.J. Raubenhold will erect a new ornamental porch at the front of the residence of Lucinda Heckman, on South Fourth Street near Grand. A wide window will also substitute several smaller ones in the front.

At the Peerless fruit farm of W.E. Schmick consisting of 160 acres, 18,000 peach and apple trees, one, two, three and four years old are nearly all in bloom and transforms the property into a veritable garden.
