On Saturday, April 25, Boyertown Community Park hosted two events geared toward celebrating the Earth and taking care of what we have.
The second annual Earthfest in conjunction with the YMCA Healthy Kids Day promoted healthy choices for the environment and how you can do your part to support the Earth.
Kaylyn Anderson, 7 of Earl, a Girl Scout in Daisy Troop 0124 handed out environmentally friendly bird feeders. Anderson and the other Girl Scouts of Troop 0124 made the bird feeders out of toilet paper rolls, peanut butter and then rolled them in bird seed.
Claire and Ilana of Girl Scout Junior Troop 1221 didn’t mind getting their hands dirty while explaining about worm composting. The girls educated people on the importance of worms to turn scraps and newspaper into compost that is beneficial to the soil.
Also at Earthfest: the Boyertown Community Library who accepted donations of gently used books, Wendy’s Flowers with colorful plants and flowers for sale, Boyertown Ladder 95 showing kids around the fire truck, North Coventry Township’s K-9 demonstration, a few furry friends from the Philadelphia Zoo, recycling activities, games, and live music, among other things.
Boyertown Community Park was also the spot where over 150 volunteers came to clean up for Comcast Cares Day.
“Comcast Cares Day is part of Comcast NBC Universal’s companywide celebration of their year-round commitment to service and the nation’s largest single-day corporate volunteer effort in the country,” said Jennifer Bilotta, Comcast Director of Public Relations.
Starting in 2001, the designated day has contributed more than 3.7 million service hours to improvement projects around the United States and worldwide.
Families, friends and community partners gathered in the park to do landscaping, cleaning, mulching and more.
David Long of Gilbertsville has been volunteering for over 16 years. “It’s great to get together with family and have a day of giving back. It’s really encouraging to see so many people working towards such an important goal of preserving our community. We enjoy doing it.”
