25 Years AgoMay 9, 1990 >> Jennifer Hoffman of Shoemakersville took several awards in competition at the Corpus Christi School, New Jersey, on Sunday. She placed first in queen modeling, and also for her baton solo in age 13-15. She took a second in military marching.

The Hamburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Poppy Queen, Michelle Lengel, sold the first poppy to Mayor John Swanger.

Gregg Adams, Hamburg, was honored during an academic awards convocation held at the University of Colorado.

50 Years AgoMay 6, 1965 >> Miss Karen Wengert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Wengert, of State Street, Hamburg, will be crowned May Queen, and Lyndell Bates, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Bates, of South Third Street, will be maid of honor, at May Day exercises to be held tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m., in connection with the spring concert in the Hamburg Area High School auditorium.

It has been reported unofficially that a compromise settlement of about $8,000.00 and other benefits will be awarded to William R. Werley, Hamburg, cattle dealer in his suit against the Price Battery Corporation, of this borough, for the sickness and death of cattle which allegedly were poisoned from lead in the Kaercher Creek running through his property.

Michael Mason, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Flowers, of Hamburg R1, received the Eagle Scout award at a meeting of the Shartlesville Lions Club in Haag’s Hotel on Monday night. Michael is a member of Boy Scout Troop 149, of Shartlesville. The Lions Club of that community is the troop sponsor and Mr. Flowers is the scout master.

A/1c Eugene T. Middlecamp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Middlecamp, of South Fourth Street, Hamburg, returned home last Tuesday, following a one-year assignment in South Viet Nam. He was stationed at Tan Son Nhut, Saigon, with the 8th Aerial Port Squadron.

75 Years AgoMay 2, 1940 >> Wilbur Bailey of the local high school has been selected to perform the duties of County Commissioner James E. Lesher, tomorrow, when high school boys of Berks County, will take over county offices in observance of Citizenship Day.

Don Rose, famous columnist, humorist and essay writer of the Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger, will be the guest speaker at the May meeting of the Woman’s Club of Hamburg in the former Moose auditorium, South Fourth Street, Hamburg, Thursday evening.

Hamburg High Athletes will be shooting at three of their own records in the 11th annual track and field meet sponsored by the West Reading High School Athletic Association on the school field Saturday afternoon.

Chuck Roast-19 cents a lb.; Smoked Picnics-14 cents a lb.; Sliced Bacon–19 cents a lb. at A&P Food Stores.

“Young Tom Edison” starring Mickey Rooney will be featured at the Strand on May 4.

100 Years AgoMay 6, 1915 >> Long, Heckman & Company, brick laying contractors of Shoemakersville, have finished the double two-story kitchen addition on Morgan Sousley’s residence at Fourth and Windsor Streets, and a bay window at the Hartman residence at Fourth and Grand Streets. They are now completing the brick work on the two residences being erected by Francis Keiser, on State Street, Hamburg, after which they will finish the new Mansion Hotel at Shoemakersville.

There was a fair attendance Saturday evening at the production in Armory Hall of the Merchant of Venice, Up-to-date, by high school pupils for the benefit of the athletic association

One of the greatest improvements for Virginville this year is the new railroad bridge which was just completed.

The French Government has closed a contract with the local hosiery mill, Strausstown, conducted by Dr. O.B. Herbein and Harry W. Anthony, for the entire output of stockings for two months, which will be approximately 13,000 dozen pairs. The stockings will be used by the soldiers of the French Army.
