“The plants we have are of unusual varieties that you can’t find in stores.” Maggie Saska, Rodale Institute’s Plant Production Specialist, knows first-hand that this Plant Sale will be well worth the trip.

The Rodale Institute Spring Open House Plant Sale will feature numerous varieties of plants and herbs that were all organically grown right here at the Rodale Institute. It will be held on May 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

When it comes to plants and herbs, it’s important to know how and where they were grown before you purchase them, especially the spring. Many plants are being grown down south in warmer weather and then being shipped up north for sale. This can cause problems because the plants were not originally acclimatized for cool weather. The plants at the Spring Open House will be ready to plant and are adjusted to the cool, spring weather.

Since these plants are certified organic, it ensures that you are getting a plant that is free of irradiation, sewage sludge, synthetic fertilizers, prohibited pesticides, and genetically modified organisms.

The Plant Sale is going to offer a wide variety of tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, lettuce, spinach, onions, and herbs. What makes these plants special is that they are varieties that you may not be able to find in stores. Two of these unique varieties are the grafted tomato plants and Mexican mint marigolds. Dan Kemper, Rodale Institute’s Strategic Support Team Member, has hand-grafted each tomato plant. Purchasing these grafted tomato plants ensures that each plant will have stronger root stocks and more productive fruit yields. Also, the Mexican mint marigolds are a great herb to use in the kitchen. The fresh leaves are great to season chicken, to be mixed in with green salads, or brewed into a sweet flavored tea.

These plants are grown and sold locally; this ensures that the profits go to supporting Rodale Institute and its surrounding communities.
