25 Years AgoMay 23, 1990 >> Marcia Sonon, a freshman at Purdue University, was recently inducted into membership in the Phi Eta Signa National Honor Society. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Sonon, Lenhartsville RD1, she is a computer technology major at the university.

Dede Fister received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in architecture May 12 from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, graduating in the top ten percent of the Class. Dede is a 1986 graduate of Hamburg Area High School and is the daughter of Keith and Dawn Fister, Hamburg.

Brian Shollenberger and Aaron Williamson, both seniors at Hamburg Area High School, announced their college plans for next year. Brian will be going to North Alabama for baseball and Aaron to Elizabethtown College for basketball.

50 Years AgoMay 20, 1965 >> Services for Walter W. Horn, founder of Horn’s Diner, between Hamburg and Shoemakersville, and its owner and operator for 32 years until his retirement three years ago, were held in the Burkey & Spacht Funeral Home, South Fourth Street, Hamburg, this afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Milton C. Starr, of 503 Franklin Street, celebrated their 69th anniversary at a dinner-party for the family, held in Horn’s Diner, near Shoemakersville, last Friday night.

Samuel G. Yoder, of Shoemakersville, is the newly-elected president of the American Milking Shorthorn Society. A Fellowship dinner in the Field House will follow the combined 175th anniversary service of St. John’s Lutheran Church and First United Church of Christ Congregations of Hamburg on Sunday, June 6.

Miss Shirley Dunkel, of Hamburg RD1 is Hamburg V.F.W.’s Poppy Queen.

David Smith, Hamburg Area High School senior and National Merit Scholarship finalist, was the guest of the Exchange Club, yesterday.

Jeanette E. Werley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis L. Werley, of Hamburg Rt 2 will receive a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from West Chester State College on Sunday afternoon.

Saturday Special Dinners: Baked Ham with Baked Potato and Cole Slaw is $1.10 at Hamburg Diner.

75 Years AgoMay 16, 1940 >> Mr. and Mrs. Irvin J. Trump accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Alton Rau of Hamburg on a trip to the New York World’s Fair and other points of interest.

Hamburg’s Fourth Annual Marble Tournament, now being conducted by Coach David C. Oberholtzer at the local schools, is progressing rapidly with all top bracket matches completed and Ray Yerger qualified to meet the winner of the other division.

“Grapes of Wrath” with Henry Fonda will be featured at the Strand on May 18.

100 Years AgoMay 20, 1915 >> Building Contractor Alfred J. Raubenhold of Hamburg has secured the contract to build the new Mansion House at Shoemakersville, to replace the one recently destroyed by fire. The building will be erected by Morris Rentschler, the proprietor of the former hotel, and will contain all modern equipment for the accommodation of guests. Work will begin at once and will be pushed rapidly to completion. Mr. Raubenhold has also secured the contract to build a new residence for John W. Shock, rural mail carrier, at the northwest corner of Third and Island Streets. It will be two and one half stories, 24 x 56 feet, with an eight -foot porch extending along the entire front. The plans were prepared by G.C. Freeman, architect, of Reading, who is a son of John Freeman on North Second Street, Hamburg.
