Helping older drivers to find the appropriate adjustments in their cars to make them safer was the topic of a recent “Smart Seniors” event at The Lutheran Home at Topton.
CarFit is national program developed by AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association designed to provide a quick, yet comprehensive check on how well older drivers and their vehicle work together.
“As we age, changes in our vision, flexibility, strength, range of motion and even size and height may make us less comfortable and reduce our control behind the wheel,” says Dr. Kayla Riegel, an occupational therapy faculty member at Alvernia University. “CarFit provides older adults with the tools to understand and apply the safety features of their car.”
At a CarFit event, trained volunteers complete a 12-point checklist with each driver. Among items checked are correct position of the driver’s seat, the driver’s ability to easily reach pedals, and proper adjustment of mirrors. Occupational therapists are on hand to provide any needed consultation for drivers on how to maintain and improve aspects related to their driving health.
“Older drivers are often the safest drivers. They are more likely to wear their seat belts, and less likely to speed,” says Connie Hartman of The Lutheran Home staff. “However, they also are more likely to be seriously injured, because of their age, if a crash does occur. They can improve their safety by ensuring their cars are properly adjusted for them.”
