The Heidelberg Association of UCC churches has decided to “March Forth for Literacy” as they join with UCC churches nationwide to encourage literacy with their Children’s Book Drive.

The Drive will reach its conclusion on Saturday, May 30, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Bern UCC Picnic Grove on Route 183 in Bern Township at Plum Creek Road. The Book Drive will be held in conjunction with a picnic that is free for all attendees and will include hot dogs and ice cream, games, and many books from which to choose.

The Heidelberg Association has been working to collect children’s books in good condition since early this year, with the plans to distribute them both at the picnic and also through the Reading-Berks Literacy Council. The Literacy Council will continue the mission and take the books for the use of school and other community programs.

Although the Heidelberg Association of UCC Churches requests that attendees at the Children’s Book Drive picnic bring along some books for donation, anyone from the community is welcome to come bearing books or just to enjoy the festivities.

Reverend William Pifer-Foote of Zion UCC in Womelsdorf discussed the picnic. “If you see something you like, we’ll let you take it! Hopefully it’s going to be a fun day.”
