A father and son who went kayaking in the Schuylkill River Sunday night, May 17, were rescued by firemen after grappling with a strong current.
Amity Fire Chief Mike Zomolsky explained that the men were stranded along the river bank and because of a swift current they couldn’t make it back upstream.
The area they were in was down a 35-foot embankment off Route 422, and then a 15-foot muddy bank down to the river.
Firefighters used ropes and ladders to complete the rescue, closing part of Route 422 for about 90 minutes.
The men called 911 and Berks dispatchers were able to pinpoint their location using satellite systems.
Neither kayaker was injured, but officials said without cell phones, they could have been stranded overnight.
