On May 26, the students at Kutztown Elementary School celebrated the Bicentennial Birthday of their hometown Kutztown.
Students began their day with a musical assembly featuring Pennsylvania Dutch instruments and songs preformed by Keith Britzenhoff.
Older elementary school students toured the Kutztown Historical Society to learn more about their historical and cultural connection to the Pennsylvania Germans who settled this area.
Mayor Sandy Green explained the role of the mayor in local government to the 3rd grade classes.
Mrs. Louise DeVall, of Rodale, presented the uses of plants during the colonial times to the 1st graders.
FFA students, Casey Wentzel and Michaela Ryan assisted the kindergarten students in understanding the cycle of plant life. Kindergarten students also planted sunflower seeds.
Fifth grade students opened a time capsule from 1976; they researched the items included in the time capsule and discussed why those items were selected. They also made personalized birth frakturs for themselves.
Fourth grade students produced Quilt Blocks using fabric crayons and muslin, Scherenschnitte, and Frakturs.
Kindergarten and first grade students learned about colonial toys and games. They produced whirligigs with thread and buttons. They also learn how to play the game of jackstraws.
All of the elementary school students were treated to a presentation from The Old Time Plowboys. Students learned about tractors and their different designs, which were used for various crops. Students learned how tools and equipment were powered by steam at the turn of the century.
The day provided students with a unique educational way to learn and understand about the cultural heritage of Kutztown.
