The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 5 announced June 10 a project to improve Interstate 78 at Exit 40 (PA 737) in Greenwich Township, Berks County will begin on Monday, June 15. The improvement project is partially financed with state funds from Pennsylvania’s transportation plan, Act 89.
Work includes reconstructing I-78 between Long Lane Road and approximately 1.2 miles west of Old Route 22, reconstructing the Exit 40 (PA 737) interchange, replacing the PA 737 bridge over I-78, realigning the intersection of PA 737 and Zettlemoyer Road, installing overhead sign structures on I-78, drainage improvements, new guiderail, new signs, new pavement markings and other miscellaneous construction.
While there are no long term lane restrictions planned on I-78 for this project, there will be times when lanes are restricted during off-peak hours. There are also no long term restrictions planned for PA 737, but there will be times when there are lane restrictions with flaggers. Updates will be provided whenever traffic patterns change.
Motorists are reminded to obey work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and traveling through work zones. These precautions are not only for their safety, but for the safety of the road crews.
Trumbull Corporation Pittsburgh is the general contractor on the $42,091,606 project. Work began is expected to be complete in December 2018.
The average daily traffic volume on this section of I-78 is 19,596 vehicles eastbound and 19,165 vehicles westbound.
