Douglassville >> The Daniel Boone Area School Board voted unanimously on Monday to appoint Aaron Sborz as assistant principal at the high school, effective July 1.

Only five of the nine board members – Andrew Basile, Brian Doty, Larry Speed, Tamara D. Twardowski and board President Richard Martino – attended the special voting meeting.

Acting Superintendent Robert Hurley said Sborz is currently a technology education teacher at the Governor Mifflin High School in Shillington, where STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) was a part of the curriculum.

Hurley said Sborz also has a strong background in discipline and athletic administration.

Sborz replaces Anne Marie Massaro in the 10-month position, with an annual salary of $72,000.

In other business, the board unanimously approved to upgrade the high school’s security camera at a cost of $22,700.

It also approved to repave the parking lot at the Monocacy Elementary Center, at a cost not to exceed $8,500.

Board members said the school district’s new food services management company, Nutrition Group Inc. of Irwin, Westmoreland County, will meet today at noon with the district’s previous 29 cafeteria workers.

The board voted on June 22 to furlough the cafeteria workers, effective June 30, due to district budget constraints.

Martino said Monday that district business manager Loren Small is credited with negotiating the cafeteria workers’ contract offer from Nutrition Group.

He said the contract includes a 2.5 percent salary increase and a continuation of benefits.

“It is only natural for Nutrition Group to want to honor them,” said board member Carol Beitz at the June 22 meeting.

She added, “I hope they stay – they are the heart of the community.”
