Each year, music students from around the world flock to Lancaster County to take part in the Lancaster International Piano Festival.
This year, for the first time, one of those students will offer a public performance on the Boston grand piano at Garden Spot Village in New Holland. Andrea Lazzaro, of Italy, will perform on Tuesday, July 21, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the community chapel.
“We are blessed to be a part of this prestigious international music event and thrilled to welcome Andrea Lazzaro to our stage,” said Colleen Musselman, director of life enrichment at Garden Spot Village.
LIPF is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to teaching classical music at the highest standard. The festival draws young aspiring concert pianists for more than a week of lessons, master classes, workshops and performances by internationally known concert artists. As part of the program, the students perform at locations throughout the area.
Born in Catania, Italy, in 1991, Lazzaro has studied piano since he was 10 years old. He graduated with honors from the Conservatory Vincenzo Bellini of Catania, where he studied under Maestro Raffaele Terlizzi, and has attended several master classes given by internationally renowned pianists, incluiding Mari Okumura, Violetta Ergorova, Bruno Canino and Aquiles Delle Vigne. Lazzaro also graduated with honors in Speech-Voice Therapy from the Medical-Surgical Specialties Department of the University of Catania.
Lazzaro will perform Aria in B-flat Major from Bach’s Birthday Cantata, Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in D Major, Beethoven’s 32 Variations in C Minor WoO 80, and Vier Klavierstucke op. 119: 3 Intermezzi and Rhapsody by Brahms.
The 7-foot Boston grand piano, designed by Steinway, was dedicated in November 2010. Prior to the piano’s arrival at Garden Spot Village, Piano4, a quartet based in Philadelphia, used the Boston grand on the group’s concert tours. Steve Sensenig, a pianist, composer and arranger from Parkesburg, played the instrument in May.
“Afterward, he sent me a note saying, ‘I must tell you that your Boston grand piano is one of the best I have ever had the chance to play! Such an amazing instrument,'” Musselman said.
Garden Spot Village, is located at 433 S. Kinzer Ave. The concert is free and open to the public.
